Breaking the Cycle: Why Employment is the Missing Piece in Recovery

Addiction recovery is about more than just treatment. Without stability, many individuals leaving detox or treatment programs struggle to find their footing—often falling back into old patterns due to a lack of opportunity. If we want to break the cycle for good, we need to look beyond short-term interventions and invest in long-term solutions. That’s where employment comes in.

At Hiregood, we believe that stable jobs create stable lives. Work isn’t just about a paycheck—it’s about purpose, structure, and community. A job provides a sense of belonging, helps rebuild confidence, and reduces reliance on social services. When people have the opportunity to support themselves, they gain independence and a real chance to move forward.

Why Employment Matters in Recovery

For many, addiction and poverty go hand in hand. Unstable housing, lack of routine, and limited employment history make it difficult for individuals in recovery to reintegrate into society. While treatment programs address the immediate health crisis, they often don’t provide a roadmap for long-term success. Without access to meaningful work, many people face overwhelming barriers to staying on a better path.

That’s why employment must be a pillar of Alberta’s Recovery Plan. By integrating job opportunities into recovery strategies, we can:

  • Reduce the risk of relapse by providing structure and purpose

  • Lower dependence on social services by fostering financial independence

  • Strengthen communities by giving people the dignity of work and self-sufficiency

Hiregood: Proof That It Works

Hiregood is already proving that employment can be a key part of recovery. Our social enterprise hires individuals facing barriers—including those exiting treatment programs—giving them the chance to rebuild their lives through meaningful work.

Many of our staff have transitioned from vulnerable situations to stable housing and long-term employment, breaking the cycle of poverty and addiction for good. By offering training, mentorship, and real job experience, we’re not just filling roles—we’re changing lives.

Time to Rethink Recovery

Recovery doesn’t end when treatment does. If we’re serious about addressing addiction in Alberta, we need to invest in long-term solutions that include employment. Work provides purpose, stability, and the opportunity to rebuild. It’s time to make jobs a core part of the recovery strategy.

Stable jobs create stable lives. Let’s make employment part of recovery.
